The White House criticized a prominent Democrat’s remarks about dark children in the Bronx, but it did so with a light censure.
” Obviously, we do n’t think that is the right way to speak about young people in any way, in any form”, press secretary Karine Jean- Pierre said Tuesday when asked about the brewing controversy.
Gov. Kathy Hochul ( D- NY ) had a feet- in- mouth time during a demonstration Monday, in which she claimed black kids do not know what the word” system” means.
Because “right now there are young black children growing up in the Bronx who do n’t even know what the word” computer” is, Hochul advocated making AI more equitable for all communities during a discussion at the Milken Institute Global Conference.”
Hochul immediately apologized, saying she misspoke and that she regrets it as the discussion spread. The topic seemingly had not yet reached Jean- Pierre, yet.
” I’m going to be extremely cautious, I have never heard these feedback”, she said when first asked about it. ” I want to make sure I go again, read the comments, and getting a sense of what is happening here”.
The reporter continued, pleading that it was “right to assume that black children do n’t understand what the word computer means.” Therefore Jean-Pierre reaffirmed that talking about young folks is inappropriate.

People of Hochul’s comments on social media, including some state legislators, have expressed disapproval of his statements. New York State Assemblywoman Karines Reyes, for instance, posted on X that she was “deeply disturbed” by Hochul’s speech.
Of course, black children in the Bronx are aware of what computers are, Hochul wrote in her explanation, noting that they frequently lack the technology necessary to get into high-paying positions in emerging AI fields. Since Day One of my Administration, I have worked hard to increase financial option, and I will continue to do so to ensure that every New Yorker has a chance to find a good-paying work.
