On Wednesday, The New School in New York City opened its primary faculty-led anti-Israel camp.
Days after New York Police Department ( NYPD ) officers cleared encampments at The New School and New York University, college staff set up tents in the lobby and established the Refaat Alareer Faculty Solidarity Encampment.
The NYPD ended up arresting 45 students involved in the camp, according to the New School Free Press.
Fewer than a dozen houses had been seen , set up in the hall.
” On Wednesday evening, automatic faculty members at The New School launched the first instructors- led camp in the country”, New School’s Students for Justice in Palestine ( TNS- SJP) said in a declaration. The behavior follows the recent spate of widespread arrests and violent incidents that occurred last week on campus at New York City’s universities when university leaders called on the New York Police Department to blow and shut down the Gaza solidarity camps.

Individuals may be heard chanting “40, 000 people dying!” outside of the tower where the faculty-led camp was located. Your arms are dark, New School! 40, 000 persons dying! Your arms are dark, Colombia”!
Then: “40, 000 people useless! Your fingers are dark, New School! 40, 000 persons dying! Your arms are dark, Colombia”!

The faculty’s needs included” the students do not remain alone,” according to TNS-SJP, adding that” their demands for quick withdrawal in companies complicit in Israel’s murderous war” were theirs.
The New School’s Board of Trustees ‘ investment committee must voting right away to withdraw from businesses that profit from the murder in Gaza and Palestine, according to the statement.
Refaat Alareer, a writer and teacher from the Gaza Strip who was killed by an Israeli strike in northeastern Gaza in December 2023, is the name of the faculty-led camp.
” Kids globally have shown amazing courage, risking arrest, loss of future prospects, punishments and evictions, not to mention violent abuse and physical murder”, the statement continued. ” They have been demonized in the establishment media, by university leaders, and at the highest levels of government for an unequivocally moral act – standing against genocide, apartheid and oppression”.
Between 270 and 300 members of The New School’s faculty took part in a vote that almost 95 percent of the board of trustees and New School Interim President Donna E. Shalala rejected in response to the arrests of the campment’s students.
