KYIV, Ukraine ( AP ) — Russian forces began a renewed ground assault on Ukraine’s northeast, killing and injuring several and forcing more than 1, 700 civilians to evacuate from the Kharkiv region, local officials said Saturday.
Artillery, cement, and flying detonations hit more than 30 various towns and villages, leaving at least three people dead and five others hurt, said Kharkiv government, Oleh Syniehubov.
Officials reported that Ukraine sent troops right away in the Kharkiv place on Friday to stop a Russian attack on local defenses.
Soviet troops stepped up their assault of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s next- largest city, in late March. The attack on Friday marked a military change in Moscow’s strategy that Ukrainian authorities had been anticipating for days.
Russian military bloggers speculated that the abuse might mark the start of a Russian “buffer area” that President Vladimir Putin had pledged to establish earlier this year to stop frequent Russian attacks on Belgorod and another Russian frontier regions.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, confirmed Friday night that Russian troops were expanding their range of functions. He also demanded that the nation’s American allies confirm that promised military aid deliveries would arrive on time.
Partner support for our troops and Russian tenacity with prompt deliveries is essential. True to the original people, he claimed in a video statement on X. Instead of just the news of a package,” the real delivery of weapons to Ukraine is a deal that really helps.”

As the movement of American military assistance to Kyiv has decreased over the past few decades, with promises of new aid still being made, the Kremlin’s forces have frequently sought to exploit Ukraine’s weapons and labor shortages.
Ukraine previously claimed to be aware that thousands of troops were being gathered along the northeastern border, close to the Kharkiv and Sumy regions. Despite Russia’s most recent ground offensive focusing on areas of eastern Ukraine farther south, intelligence officials added that they had anticipated an attack there.
While Russia’s gains in the region have so far been limited, analysts at the U. S. think tank Institute of the Study of War ( ISW) described them Friday as “tactically significant”.
They claimed that the initial assault in Kharkiv was intended to “draw” Ukrainian personnel and supplies from other important areas of the front in eastern Ukraine, despite the fact that Russia only” committed relatively limited manpower to their initial assaults.”
The Russian military might try to blockade Kharkiv, which has a population of 1.1 million and is located about 30 kilometers ( about 20 miles ) south of the border, as well as cut key supply routes there.
Russia made a poor attempt to storm Kharkiv in the beginning of the conflict, but it retreated from its suburbs after about a month. In the fall of 2022, seven months later, Ukraine’s army pushed them out of Kharkiv. The brave counterattack persuaded Western nations that Ukraine was capable of capturing Russia’s military support in the war effort.
