The Wisconsin Supreme Court will reexamine a crucial 2022 decision that significantly reduced the use of ballot drop boxes during a vital election-year swing position.
On Monday, the government’s high court will begin hearing oral arguments in the case. The court then has a 4-3 liberal majority, which means that the court’s decision from the previous year’s poll could be overturned. Given the margins of the upcoming vote, the decision will be carefully watched.
Democrats have been working hard to reverse the 2022 decision, which only made absentee ballot drop boxes available to election clerks ‘ practices. Former US president Donald Trump has fabricated claims that voter fraud was caused by the common use of ballot boxes in 2020.
However, Republicans and other conservative parties have been pushing for the 2022 decision to become upheld, filing some briefs with the country’s Supreme Court over the issue, according to NBC News.
Chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party Brian Schimming questioned the safety of these drop boxes and claimed that their re-usage might lead to” the possibility of wackiness.”
” I’m not hostile to looking at things differently”, Schimming said,” but we’re six months away” from the election, and” we have a Supreme Court who feels as though they’re the second Legislature”.
However, according to Jay Heck, the senior director of Common Cause Wisconsin, more drop boxes would make election more convenient for Badger State residents.
” Despite fears and statements by election deniers and conspiracy theorists, drop boxes were not used for any nefarious function like they’ve claimed”, he said.
In the race for control of the U.S. Senate, Wisconsin is a crucial condition.
