Pope Francis addressed a three-day climate summit that will take place in the Vatican in May, claiming that climate change has brought the world to its “breaking place.”
A strong believer in the culture” crisis”, the pope wrote that he has “heartfelt problems” for “our struggling planet”, contending that” the world in which we live is collapsing” because of society’s failure to properly address the issue.
It is “indubitable” that the impact of climate change will significantly prejudice the lives and families of some individuals, he contends, adding that its effects are now felt in the regions of “healthcare, sources of employment, access to resources, accommodation, forced journeys, etc”.
The pope quotes the American Bishops, claiming that the most vulnerable people in the world are responsible for climate change because it “is one of the main challenges facing community and the international community” and that its effects are “unique to everyone at home and everywhere in the world.”
In fact, San Diego Bishop Robert W. McElroy, who Pope Francis elevated to the cardinal position in 2022, claimed that while contraception is a terrible sin, “unchecked climate change has increased the long-term death toll and threatens the very future of humanity.”
Both abortion and climate change are” core life issues in the Catholic Church”, McElroy has declared, but neither should be identified as “preeminent”.
Curiously, Pope Francis has singled out the United States as particularly responsible for the climate “emergency” because of the “irresponsible lifestyle” of its citizens.
A significant long-term impact would be felt by the pope in October when we consider that emissions per person in the United States are about two times higher than those of those living in China and that average emissions are about seven times higher than those of the poorest countries.
The alert people at The Pillar Catholic, a Catholic news website, pointed out at the time that China’s per capita emissions levels “are significantly higher than the global average,” are true.
The pope also failed to mention that in aggregate, China’s emissions are more than , double , those of the United States, and America’s air is among the cleanest of any nation, while China’s air quality is among the poorest.
Francis declares that climate change is” a drama that harms us all” and that it is” a tragic and striking example of structural sin” during his address to the Vatican summit, which will take place May 15 through May 17.
