Border patrol officers stopped a car heading for Mexico with almost a quarter of a million hidden dollars hidden inside.
The Nissan hatchback was reported to be crossing the Pharr International Bridge in Mexico as it was heading west.
Officers then searched the vehicle and found 14 bundles of cash totaling$ 247, 500 hidden within the aircraft.
A federal crime that could lead to arrest and sequestration of the money is if you do n’t declare more than$ 10, 000 when entering or leaving the country. According to CBP, individuals may file a petition to have the money returned, but first, they may establish the currency’s origin and intended purpose.
“CBP officers do outgoing enforcement operations to protect against unidentified exportations of bulk U. S. currency, which often does become proceeds from alleged illegal activity or currency that funds international legal organizations”, said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez , of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.
While Homeland Security Investigations special agents launched a criminal investigation, CBP officers seized the dollar.
