India backed entire UN membership for Palestine, underscoring that only a two-state solution could bring about lasting peace in the conflict-ridden region.
Last year, India voted in favor of a document UN General Assembly resolution that stated Palestine may be admitted as a full member of the UN and suggested that the Security Council “review the subject” favorably.
” In keeping with our historic place, we support the participation of Palestine at the UN and, thus, we have voted in favour of this Resolution”, India’s continuous member to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, told the UN General Assembly on Monday.
” We hope that Palestine’s application may get reconsidered by the Security Council in due course and that Palestine’s venture to become a member of the UN does get endorsed”, she said.
The United Arab Emirates, who presided over the Egyptian Group, presented the Arab Group’s resolution” Admission of new People to the UN” as part of an urgent special session held on Friday for the 193-member General Assembly.
With India’s voting, the solution received 143 vote in behalf, nine against, and 25 abstentions.
After the ballot, there was cheers in the UNGA house.
According to the quality,” the State of Palestine is eligible for participation in the United Nations” in accordance with Article 4 of the UN Charter, and so,” may be admitted to participation in the United Nations.”
In light of this decision, it was suggested that the Security Council “reexamine the problem favorably.”
Now, Palestine is a “non- part observer status” at the UN, a standing granted to it by the General Assembly in 2012. Palestine is able to participate in the world body’s proceedings thanks to this position, but it is unable to cast a resolution.
Ruchira Kamboj emphasized that only the two-state solution, which is resolved through immediate and significant negotiations between both sides regarding last status issues, will bring about an enduring peace. India’s leadership has consistently argued this.
According to India, it is committed to supporting a two-state option in which Palestinians can dwell peacefully within safe borders and without regard for Israel‘s security requirements. We urge all parties to create situations conducive to resuming immediate peace negotiations as soon as possible in order to reach a profound option,” she said.
