Mayor of New York City Eric Adams ( D) is promoting the idea of hiring newly arrived immigrants as lifeguards for the city’s public pools, calling them “excellent swimmers.”
Adams argued in a media briefing on Tuesday that the hundreds of thousands of workers who have arrived in New York City over the past few years are still unqualified for employment.
Otherwise, Adams said he would like to see people who are “excellent athletes” offered job as lifeguards at the city’s public pools and beaches.
” Let me use your imagination for a minute. If we had a immigrant and asylum seeker plan that claims ‘ Those work that we are in great need, we had expedite]work permits ],'” Adams said:
How do we have a huge body of people that are in our city and country, that are excellent athletes, and at the same time we need lifeguards? The only challenge is that we wo n’t grant them the opportunity to work as lifeguards. That just does n’t make sense. But if we had a plan that says ‘ We have a shortage of food service personnel, those who fit the criteria, we’re going to speed you. ‘]Emphasis added ]

We have all these qualified individuals waiting to get the work who have the knowledge they need, but administration prevents us from letting them work. Simply put, that makes no sense. ]Emphasis added]
Adams has long advocated for using the southern border as merely a station where immigrants who have labor permits enter the country to work.
Last October, while traveling through Latin America,  , Adams suggested that the country’s migrants deserve a “right to job” in the U. S. regardless of the effect that mass immigration has on the career aspirations and pay of Americans.
” When you look at Colombia, they have really shown how to integrate people into their societies, and one of the most crucial way to do this is to allow people to work,” Adams said. Nothing is more compassionate and more American than your right to work, and we think we should prolong that straight.
