Opponents say control is’ Orwellian,’ ‘ re- education’
According to the school Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine, New York University students who were detained at a new anti-Israel encampment are required to compose “reflection” essays as part of their course.
According to a news release, the school’s Office of Student Conduct last year handed down the consequences to individuals who were detained on April 22 in connection with a pro-Palestinian camp on school.
The pro- Israeli team referred to the punitive measures as” Totalitarian” in the release.
One sentence, a five to six page “reflection paper”, had include” a clear, properly- developed response that demonstrates that you have thought about all aspects of the issue/decision/behavior that resulted in your involvement with the Office of Student Conduct”, according to a university instructions sheet.
The instructions strip states the papers” may serve to justify your actions, evaluate the actions of others, or issue a perform regulation”.
Students are also required to describe their personal values in the article and consider how their actions have affected others, including” culture as a whole” and the university. Also, the instructions tell students to acquire what they need to do to “make items right”.
NYU is requiring additional student activists to create “dozens of writing projects” through its Ethos Integrity Series Modules, according to the media release. The collection is supposed to aid students develop “moral logic” and “ethical choice- making skills”.
In addition to writing essays, some kids were banned from college and school activities, according to the party.
Professor Sara Pursley, a member of the pro-Palestine group, a professor of Middle Eastern studies, criticized the disciplinary measures in the news release.
Students are prohibited from writing about personal values that might be relevant to this, such as a belief in freedom of expression, the obligation to oppose genocide, or the duty of nonviolent civil disobedience in some circumstances, Pursley said. ” This seems rather ironic in an essay on integrity”.
Robert George, a conservative Princeton University law professor, stated on X that NYU’s specific essay requirements are concerning because he thinks students should be disciplined for engaging in unlawful behavior.
” Students who engage in disruption, harassment, or other unlawful activities – no matter the cause they are seeking to advance – should be subject to disciplinary proceedings and appropriate sanctions, but they should not be subjected to thought reform or re- education”, George wrote.
Hundreds of NYU students and faculty who refused to leave a makeshift anti-Israel encampment in late April are being detained by police wearing riot gear, according to The Fix.
Police said the protesters were arrested for “disorderly conduct” and unlawfully blocking traffic, according to the Washington Square News, NYU’s student newspaper.
