Israeli government spokesman Tal Heinrich claimed on Thursday that Israel’s commitment to democracy and free conversation stems from defense minister Yoav Gallant’s open criticism of his own country’s post Gaza policy.
” Israel is a lively democracy. The citizens of this country, and also the government’s elected leaders, are entitled to voice their opinions”, Heinrich said.
Gallant earlier this week made a speech in which he criticized his own government for declining to lay out a specific plan for” the day after” in Gaza. It was later distributed by the Government Press Office. His condemnation echoed those of the Biden administration, which applauded Gallant’s remarks.
A political upheaval followed, one that led Hamas to say that it was really winning the war in Gaza, causing the Israeli government to officially split.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded, even publicly, that wartime strategies depended on defeating Hamas initially.
Heinrich argued that Israelis are “overwhelmingly committed to achieving our really combat goals.” And one of our goals is to make sure that Gaza will always pose a threat to Israel once more.
She claimed that there were areas of agreement within the state. After the war, Israel was told that it “must maintain protection duty in Gaza,” adding that there would be no breach of our protection.
Another contention was that” the de-radicalization of Israeli society must be woven into the restoration of Gaza.” She quoted Netanyahu, who said,” We will not exchange’ Hamastan’ with’ Fatahstan'”, referring to Fatah, the reputedly “moderate” political group that controls the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank but also supports evil.
Heinrich added that the American war effort was not being hampered by criticism from the United States, including President Joe Biden’s decision to deny a sale of bombs.
We have some internal conflicts with our closest friends, it’s no solution. And it’s cool. It happens in people”, she said.
Israel appreciated the government’s help, she said,” for giving us the resources to do whatever it takes to protect ourselves”.
Heinrich also noted that 626 Israeli soldiers have already fallen in the conflict, as a result of the ongoing fighting in Gaza this year. Additionally, she criticized the United Nations Relief and Works Agency ( UNRWA ), drawing attention to a video that showed armed terrorists firing from inside a UNRWA compound in Rafah earlier this week.
“UNRWA is in sleep with Hamas. UNRWA may be replaced by non-tainted companies that are not influenced by terrorism help. Heinrich added that UNRWA ‘s , raison d ‘être was to perpetuate the conflict, not to resolve it.
