
A retired Major General was one of the five suspects who were detained in Sri Lanka as part of a human trafficking operation to enlist former military officers from the Russian and Ukrainian makes until May 30. According to the police, the Sri Lankan soldiers enlisted in the Russian and Ukrainian troops after being defrauded by unscrupulous international work organizations.
The former military personnel’s travel was facilitated by the original key, a Lieutenant of the Sri Lanka Army, and three individuals from a foreign employment agency who had demanded large sums of money.
The Negombo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, which held the defendants until May 30, ordered all of them to be released. Additionally, steps have been taken to temporarily halt the international work agency’s license.
Some of these retired Army officers, who had left in March, were in contact with them since, according to the family, and called for state assistance in order to find them.
Sri Lanka held the role of an unreliable employment agency and former service members accountable for their involvement in the ball.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe had instructed the foreign secretary Ali Sabry to give a high-powered group to Russia to look into the matter, according to the state minister of foreign affairs Tharaka Balasuriya.
Many Sri Lankans have been granted holiday visas, according to Balasuriya.
” Among them were a considerable amount of retired military personnel”, Balasuriya said.
The Sri Lankan defense department acknowledged that in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, at least 16 retired military personnel have died.
According to estimates, 600 to 800 Sri Lankans are now serving on the front lines of combat in both Russia and Ukraine as a result of this human trafficking activity.
