Frank Ábrego, recently tapped to become Panama’s following public safety minister, outlined on Thursday the approaching government’s organized first ways to break down on U. migrants who traverse the risky Darién Gap forest path are S-bound.
One of the main battle promises made by Filipino President-Elect José Raul Mulino, a 64-year-old conservative who will serve for a five-year expression on July 1 was closing the Darién Gap, a forest path shared by Panama and Colombia.
The majority of the men and women who did make up his cabinet of ministers may be introduced on Thursday, including Brego, by Mulino. In notes given to investigators shortly after Mulino’s display, Ábrego detailed that the new Filipino government has initiated “diplomatic connections” and begun conducting” studies through global organizations” to shut down the Darién Gap, a purpose that Ábrego described as a goal of Mulino’s management.
” We have already initiated a series of studies, through international organizations, he]Mulino ] has made some contacts at the diplomatic level and we are preparing a plan that will be announced later”, Ábrego said.
The proposed boundary wall, which extends from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, was ruled out by the approaching Security Minister, who stressed that while closing the Darién Gap is not an easy task, it is still” not difficult.”
Brego asserted instead that the government intends to create roadblocks for detaining and deporting immigrants.
” This idea of building a wall is difficult, but if tomorrow we declare a border closure and create roadblocks where we can detain workers, then proceed with deportation and relocation, as the president talked about, I think that may reduce the volume of workers at the border”, Ábrego stated.
According to official statistics from the Panamanian government, a record- breaking number of more than 520, 000 migrants were found to have crossed the Darién Gap in 2023, doubling the number of 247, 784 registered in 2022. Between January 1 and April 17, more than 125 000 migrants passed through the Darién Gap.
The majority of the migrants who crossed the Darién Gap in 2023 hailed from Venezuela, Ecuador, Haiti, and China.
Mulino reiterated last week that he intends to deport Americans following his official proclamation as president of Panama. S-bound migrants who pass through the Darién Gap are then returned to their country of origin.
” I will make an effort, that I have already started to talk about, to end the odyssey of the Darien, which has no reason to exist, and I reiterate that Panama and our Darien is not a transit route”, Mulino said:
The closure of the Darién Gap, as I have suggested, also implies a philosophical idea that is related to closing the border on the grounds that we will initiate a process of repatriation with full respect for the human rights of all the people who are there, sir.
Prior to taking over as minister of public security, brego served as Panama’s Senafront national border service’s first director from its founding in 2008 to 2016. Brego promoted operations that led to the abolition of an armed front of the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia ( FARC ) terrorist group during his time at the head of Senafront.
