The man who attacked the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA ) was given a 30-year prison sentence on Friday.
In November 2023, a jury convicted David DePape , of attacking Paul Pelosi with a nail at the Pelosis ‘ mansion in California.
DePape was also found guilty of attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi even though she was n’t at the time.
DePape’s imprisonment was announced after the Department of Justice published a letter on May 10 warning that a 30-year prison sentence “was not sufficient to meet the punishment goals.”
The accused “planned and unleashed crime and has remained faithful to his belief that his actions were necessary,” according to the prosecution. The punishment factors require the recommended maximums for the statutes, and they demonstrate that the 30-year maximum on the matter with the most important optimum is insufficient to meet the sentencing goals.
According to federal prosecutors, DePape should receive a sentence of 20 years in prison for” Count One,” which was related to attempted kidnapping, and a 30-year prison sentence for” Count Two,” which was related to assault, along with” 20 years on Count Two to run consecutive to Count One.”
The Court should also require a$ 100 special assessment per count as well as three years of supervised release for Count One and five for Count Two, according to prosecutors.
Lawyers explained that this would result in a jail sentence of” 40 times” in prison.
DePape, a Canadian former nude advocate, came to the Pelosis ‘ home in October 2022 with the purpose of speaking to Nancy about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
When he arrived at the house, DePape rather came across 82- yr- ancient Paul and constantly asked,” Where’s Nancy”?
In November 2023, DePape testified before a federal judge about how he had planned to speak with Nancy” about Soviet presence” during the 2016 presidential election, dress up in an “inflatable fairy mask, and upload his investigation” online, the Guardian reported.
During his witness, DePape expressed his sympathies that he had hurt Paul.
” He was always my destination, and I’m sorry that he got hurt”, DePape said.
DePape and Paul, who appear to be wearing a button-down clothing and underpants, are seen opening the door to Nancy and Paul Pelosi’s residence on film. DePape responded by dropping the nail, saying” Nope,” before pulling it out of Paul’s hands and swinging it at him.
Paul suffered a bone fracture and other head injuries as a result of DePape’s harm. Following the attack, Paul had powerful bone surgery.
Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley stated in court that she had considered DePape’s lack of criminal history and her ability to sway conspiracy theories, but that the murder at the time of the attack was” fully gratuitous,” as the New York Times claimed.
