To prevent “escalation” in the region, senior officials from the Biden administration held direct discussions with the Iranian government in the Gulf state of Oman last month, even as its proxies continue to harm Israel and international delivery.
The meeting is one of only a dozen diplomatic encounters between the United States and Iran, and it recalls the 2013 key discussions between President Barack Obama’s ambassadors and the Iranian government, which set the stage for the Iran nuclear deal.
Iran’s acceptance of that deal, which was widely regarded as advantageous, allowed it to become a nuclear power after around ten years. President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018, President Joe Biden has tried, in vain, to maintain it.
Given the Obama/Biden track record, the new discussions in Oman may serve as a stepping stone to a larger regional conflict or as a reassuring a Tehrani that neither Israel nor the United States will pin it in response to its anger.
The Times of Israel reported:
In Oman this week, senior US officials spoke with Iran about the potential for an uprising in the Middle East following the Islamic Republic’s and Israel’s conflicts next month.
According to a Friday Axios statement, the Biden presidency sent acting acting special envoy to Iran Abram Paley and White House Middle East minister Brett McGurk for the first direct discussions between the two nations since January.
The statement was confirmed to The Times of Israel by an established from the Israeli government, who added that McGurk was also in Saudi Arabia this year.
The Iranian government launched some 300 missiles and drones against Israel last quarter, most of which were intercepted. Israel responded by launch precise attacks on Egyptian air defenses close to proper sites, which shows its capacity to do much more in the future. The Biden administration also urged Israel to refrain from retaliation.
