The city’s neon-lit strip of black tonks, Morgan Wallen’s fresh bar, is under consideration by Nashville councilmembers, who have objected to his use of a racist slur that allegedly sparked controversy in 2021 and new criminal charges that the country singer have charged with allegedly threw a chair off a rooftop near two police officers.
The Nashville Metro Council voted 30- 3 Tuesday night against the proposed mark at Morgan Wallen’s This Bar &, Tennessee Kitchen, which is set to open this trip. Similar to those at several nearby bars, the signal would have hung over a public road. Such a sign typically does n’t require local government approval, but it does need to be done in a respectful manner.
During discussion, councilmembers called Wallen’s feedback cruel and his actions damaging. Additionally, they claimed that the actor had had numerous next possibilities.
” I do n’t want to see a billboard up with the name of someone who is racially slurping and chairs falling from balconies,” said Councilmember Delishia Porterfield, a Black man.
Councilmember Jacob Kupin presented the proposal, but said he” thought long and hard” about what to do because of Wallen’s actions. He said the second- group firm managing the business, TC Restaurant Group, has been “really, a fine spouse” and has worked to make downtown Nashville safer.
The Associated Press contacted TC Restaurant Group and Wallen’s journalist to inquire about the government vote.
” The fact that someone’s name is going up on a bar does n’t mean that we condone all the behavior, but again I appreciate the efforts to make amends, the positive response, and again, the operator themselves I do n’t think should be penalized for what happened”, Kupin said.
An preliminary hearing in Wallen’s legal case was postponed until Aug. 15. According to an arrest affidavit, the chair that Wallen is accused of throwing off the roof of the six- story Chief’s bar on April 7 landed about a yard ( meter ) from two police officers. Witnesses reported seeing Wallen laugh at the incident to the police after they saw him remove a head from the roof.
He is facing three felonies for disorderly conduct and one criminal for disorderly conduct.
In a statement issued by Wallen, he said he accepted “responsibility” and was” not happy” of his actions. The declaration mentioned making “amends” and touching base with law enforcement.

Wallen’s” One Point at a Time” record spent 16 days at the top of the Billboard 200 in 2023 and was the most- consumed record in the U. S. next year. Top 10 hits from the album included” Last Night”,” You Proof” and” Thinkin ‘ Bout Me”.
After footage of him yelling a racist slur that he would later claim he had never heard of, Wallen was permanently suspended from his label in 2021.
Kid Rock’s bar, not far from Wallen’s new establishment, was the site of an earlier sign controversy. Some council members decried the design of a giant guitar ahead of a 2019 vote, which had the base purposefully shaped like a woman’s buttocks. Ultimately, they approved it.
