In a disaster victory over Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda won a subsequent five-year term as president of the country.
Nauseda received 74.5 % of the votes, while Simonyte received 24.1 %, according to preliminary results from the Lithuanian Central Electoral Commission.
Nauseda, 60, is a mild conservative who has long supported Ukraine, a place that is shared by the political spectrum. Many people who have fled autocratic oppression in neighboring Belarus and Russian persecution have found refuge in Lithuania during his administration.
” Lithuania´s independence and freedom is like a delicate vehicle that we must appreciate, protect and reduce from cracking”, Nauseda said Sunday evening after the vote had been counted, the Baltic News Service reported.

Nauseda, a former businessman, entered politics with his powerful political run in 2019. In the first round, he and Simonyte won, but they were unable to eke out a majority of the necessary votes to win the president.
The vote came at a time when, in particular, in the crucial European area, Russian victories in Ukraine are raising more questions about Moscow’s intentions.
