At least two Texas border leaders are expected to travel to Washington on Tuesday when President Joe Biden will make an executive get announcing his most recent and violent strategy to reduce the number of people who can seek asylum in the country.
Mayors of Brownsville and Edinburg both confirmed that the White House had invited them to make an multiculturalism statement on Tuesday. Garza said he would possess more information about his ideas on Monday, while Cowen confirmed to the Associated Press that he would go.
Importantly, the Democratic governor of Eagle Pass, a border community border town in Texas-Mexico where a high number of migrants sparked a state-wide border security conflict, had never received an invitation as of Sunday. The president from McAllen said he was invited, but could not enter because of a previous responsibility.
A White House spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment on other leaders who had been invited to the news right away.
The White House was reportedly working on an executive order last week that would finalize the asylum process and automatically deny entry to refugees once the number of people who have been encountered by U.S. border officials exceeded a fresh daily level.
The punitive action is anticipated given that Mexico’s increased enforcement efforts have decreased along the southern U.S. frontier since December. However, Biden wants to stop any potential spikes in bridges that might happen later in the year as the drop election draws near, when the weather warms and the number tends to rise.
Before the November elections, citizens are still concerned about immigration, with Republicans eager to condemn Biden politically for it. Democrats have reacted by saying that Republicans broke a nonpartisan border deal in Congress that would have resulted in the toughest immigration laws to be put in place in decades.
