Professor AI: OpenAI Targets Higher Education with ‘ChatGPT Edu’

The release of ChatGPT Edu, a specialised AI system that it claims will improve the academic environment, has been announced by OpenAI in partnership with Arizona State University ( ASU).

According to Forbes, OpenAI has announced a customized version of its ChatGPT AI system that empowers universities by deploying cutting-edge AI systems across educational, study, and operating teams around the world. In ensuring that ChatGPT Edu’s creation aligns with the distinct demands and challenges of the academic environment, OpenAI and ASU have played a significant role in shaping the organization.

Media and Technology Conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, US, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. In contrast to the summit’s usual center for handshakes and mergers, the summit could adopt a little different tone this year in the face of sluggish offer volume, inflation, and higher interest rates. The broad AI integration experience at ASU was crucial to the development of ChatGPT Edu. Through its AI Innovation Challenge, the school has conducted over 200 AI projects since January, providing invaluable input to boost the product’s features and usability for educational purposes. Lev Gonick, ASU’s chief information officer, emphasized the significance of this strategic relationship, stating,” ASU’s strategic relationship with OpenAI sites us at the forefront of modern advances in training”.

ChatGPT Edu, which is scheduled to launch this summer, is said to be made specifically for the educational sector. The platform incorporates the latest GPT- 4o model, which offers advanced reasoning capabilities across text, audio, and vision. It also provides robust administrative controls, data security measures, and high usage limits to accommodate the diverse needs of universities. Elizabeth Reilley, executive director of AI acceleration at ASU, highlighted the platform’s alignment with the university’s principled innovation strategy, emphasizing the incorporation of community feedback to enhance its features.

The enormous potential that lies ahead is already being exploited by universities in creative ways. For instance, ASU’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is developing an AI tutor to assist psychology students by acting as a real course tutor to advance their understanding of the subject matter. Similarly, the university’s School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence is harnessing AI to tackle complex challenges such as traffic congestion, optimizing routes for both autonomous and human- driven vehicles.

Critics do n’t believe the impact of AI on universities is nearly as positive as those of OpenAI and ASU. The blatant cheating that ChatGPT and other AI tools enable has a negative impact on education. An astonishing 22 million AI-generated papers were submitted by students, according to a report from Breitbart News earlier this year.
