In a showdown with Caitlin Clark, ESPN character Pat McAfee attempted to criticize her for believing her victory was down to race.
After addressing the brutal foul that Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter committed against Clark and how the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese has since entered the pro ranks, McAffee then turned to the idea that the WNBA’s sudden rise in popularity is due to the current “class ” of rookies.
“I’m not going to say anything about the players on the court, ” McAfee said. If an athlete believes they can get in your mind by bodying you or talking to you, they will do what they are going to accomplish. ”

There seems to be this idea that this overall rise in success and popularity in the WNBA is due to this whole freshman class, and I do have a concept for the sports media or the former NBA players. I think there’s a prospect Chennedy Carter of Chicago, whenever she’s going to Caitlin, you see Angel Reese get all jacked up about it and celebrating, I think that ’s because she thinks Angel Reese deserves more credit than what she’s getting. Caitlin’s getting all this credit and you hear a lot of sports media, ‘This is an entire class, this rookie class is the reason why this is happening it ’s the next generation, ’ well that ’s fun. ”
Then McAfee presented a prepared presentation that described the current quarterback class ‘ effects on scores, popularity, etc.
“ I would like the internet people that continue to say, ‘this freshman class, this freshman class, this quarterback class. There is one white woman for the Indiana staff that is a superstar, and that is because she stayed in Iowa, put her own money on her back, and transformed a system from nothing to a multi-year success tale. ” McAfee said.
Is it because she would eventually break the NCAA’s total points record?” Is there a possibility that people will really enjoy watching her play sports because of how incredible she is, what she did, what she stood for, and how she went about pursuing what she went for, sometimes. Instead, we are forced to hear people claim that we only like her because she is light and that she is only well because the rest of the freshman class behaves in this way. Well, that ’s a bunch of bullsh*t, and we think the WNBA, more specifically, their refs, need to quit trying to screw her over at every single move. ”

McAfee posted a rare explanation on X following a stream of censure from the outside and inside of ESPN.
“ I should n’t have used ‘white b-tch ’ as a descriptor of Caitlin Clark. No matter the environment. . even if we are discussing culture as a contributing factor to some of the things that happen. . I have way too much value for her and women to put that into the world, ” McAfee authored for X.
