Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA ), a ranking member of CNN’s” Out Front,” acknowledged that there was no evidence for six-foot social distancing guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic, but argued that the guidelines were necessary because” they had to choose an arbitrary number to make it simple for people to understand the concept of social distancing.
Guest Erin Burnett asked,” ]Fauci] did also discuss about some things that he conceded on. He conceded, for instance, Congressman, that there’s no academic foundation for the six- foot distancing guidelines. He acknowledged that vaccine mandates may have had adverse effects. Do you still think that he accomplished the best that was possible?
Ruiz responded,” I think that he did the best that he could have …done under the circumstances, which he explained very early on, where we had thousands of people dying from this book influenza and , we were figuring things out as we went. And with more information, we were able to adapt. Let me turn things around for a second because the Republicans attempted to use the six feet of social distance as an attack on the fundamental social norm of social distance when you have an aerosolized or droplet-transferable disease from someone’s lips. Now, it does n’t take data to show you that if you jump off an airplane without a parachute, you’re going to die. We are aware that you are more vulnerable to getting aerosolized malware or droplets into your eyes, nose, or mouth if you are far away from someone’s ability to extract, cough up, or cough aerosolized droplets [s]. Was there any evidence to support the problem that was posed, then, to whether it should have been six feet, ten feet, 50 miles, or three foot? And that is not. So they had to choose an arbitrary amount to make the concept of social distancing simple for everyone.
