Activists worry families will turn to smugglers excluded legal recourse, while GOP House members argue that the helmet on illegal immigration should be “zero.”
Numerous pro-immigrant organizations worry that the order will prevent asylum applicants from receiving fair treatment and put them in the hands of pirates who will profit from them.
” The Biden administration’s proposed actions are a step back in our government’s commitment to animal rights and hospital protections, as well as a humanitarian and orderly approach at the border”, said Dylan Corbett, senior director of the El Paso- based Hope Border Institute.
The Department of Homeland Security is instructed to preclude applicants for asylum thought who enter the country between ports of entry after improper border crossings reach a regular 2, 500 level. The initiative aims to stop illegal border crossings and improve the efficiency of governmental agencies managing the border.
Republicans viewed the executive order as social. They claimed that when Biden took office in January 2021, he had encouraged foreigners to pursue entry into the country. He had also claimed that he had failed to secure the frontier.
” On day one, this leader signed lots of executive orders that led to this frontier problems. He has since abandoned all accountability and rights for this issue. He also ( denied ) that he had any authority to solve or address this crisis”, said U. S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R- Arizona. ” This 2, 500- people control, that’s a concern. How many people may enter the country without entering the country before our border agents are able to perform their duties? If that number can be 2, 500, why ca n’t it be zero”?
Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, whose district includes Eagle Pass, Del Rio, and El Paso border towns, claimed that Biden did little to halt illegal immigration when thousands of people waited for weeks under roads next to the Rio Grande while waiting for paperwork. The president is trying to win political points as the November election draws nearer thanks to an electorate that polls indicate does n’t think he is doing enough to address immigration.
Gonzales remarked,” President Biden and his presidency have ignored the issue at our territories for years.” ” President Biden is using an executive order to score low political positions now that the election is only a few weeks away.” The moment was years previously, well before there were over 9 million illegal border crossings.
While no criticizing Biden, U. S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D- Texas, expressed sorrow that the mayor’s executive order merely addressed enforcement. She also criticized her GOP colleagues for refusing to work on bipartisan immigration reform to address this and upcoming border issues.
” I understand the administration is navigating this challenge without adequate resources and appropriate legislation, but I’m disappointed that the focus is now solely on enforcement,” Escobar said.” It is my sincere hope that administrative actions on immigration relief, such as permanent resident status for spouses of U.S. citizens, and designations of Temporary Protective Status for vulnerable populations will also occur,” Escobar said.
U. S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D- Texas, said the executive order would “fundamentally change asylum law” for the worse and open the door for future Republican presidents to go even further.
” If this executive order goes into effect, it’s likely that every future president, especially Republicans, will use and expand it to choke off immigration and the right to asylum”, Castro said in a statement Tuesday. President Biden has worked tirelessly to improve the country’s future and has succeeded admirably in many public policy areas. However, this executive order is incorrect and overly broad.
The El Paso-based Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center’s executive director Marisa Limon Garza agrees that orderly immigration is necessary. She called Tuesday’s executive order a” show of force”.
” It’s a way to lower the rate of immigration at the southern border.” It has been reported by a number of news outlets as the subject of this upcoming presidential election, so it’s not surprising for this current administration to come out strong in their stance on the southern border, according to Limon Garza. ” Unfortunately, it is out of step with what are real solutions. ]…. ] We obviously need more things like work authorizations, more legal channels for people to enter their homes, and other forms of humanitarian aid for people who are migrating from all over the world, according to Limon Garza.
She added that rejecting asylum seekers could lead to transnational criminal organizations obtaining their information, or it could force the migrants to enter the country on dangerous soil.
” The reality is migration is big business. So many people, organizations, governments make money on the backs of people on the move — whether is through the actual movement of people, the housing of people or the incarceration of people”, she said. ” We are aware that those in the crosshairs of this will be at a disadvantage when attempting to protect themselves.”
