Lebanon’s security forces shot and captured an intruder who had opened fire on the US Embassy on Wednesday, escalating the conflicts in a hit country that has been reeling from decades of cross-border bombings between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah. A security guard was hurt during the attack, according to the military, but it did not specify how or whether the wounds were severe.
The Syrian army identified the shooter as a Palestinian national and claimed he was receiving medical care in a hospital, but it was not immediately clear what motivated him. According to Lebanon’s state-run information company, a second person was afterward detained on suspicion of participation in the assault.
