Ten workers have died or been killed trying to cross the border illegally between San Diego and Tijuana in the first five months of this year, according to the Border Report.
Six workers died after falling from the border challenge, two were shot and killed by robbers or traffickers at the border, according to Enrique Lucero, chairman of the Migrant Affairs Office in Tijuana, according to El Sol de Tijuana paper.
He added that 16 people have suffered injuries since Jan. 1 while trying to cross the border fraudulently.
” Over the past few decades, unusual bridges between San Diego and Baja California have increased,” said Lucero.
Lucero attributes the rise in border crossings in the San Diego-Baja territory to harsher sanctions, including prison time, for people entering the United States through Texas.
He urges people to wait for a CBP One apps to allow them to enter the country legally and seek asylum, rather than cross the border illegally.
Since it can take longer than six months, some workers reluctance to wait for a CBP One session.
” We understand the anguish, but it’s not worth risking your life, the constitutional way is through the CBP One game, it’s the only guarantee to at least getting an appointment with an immigration officer, and it’s healthy and secure”, said Lucero.
