According to the National Electoral Institute, Baja California was the state in Mexico with the lowest vote participation next Sunday.
Just 48 % of registered voters in Baja California, one of 32 says, cast ballots, according to figures released by the federal agency.
The state of Yucatán was the highest with a 73 percent voting participation. The national regular was 61 percentage.
” Initial assessments indicate a good trend when you consider there was a 10 percent increase over the last votes in 2021″, said Luís Alberto Hernández Morales, mind of the country’s political university.
Statewide, the city of Mexicali, Baja California’s capital had a 51 percent voter participation rate, the lowest was the city of Tecate with 44 percent.
Hernandez Morales said they made an effort to have as many people as possible cast ballots, some of which lasted until 8 p.m. or two hours after the polls were scheduled to close.
The law mandates that if voters are in line after 6 p.m., they must continue voting until the line is finished or the ballots are out.
Voters in Tijuana elected Ismael Burgueño as their new mayor.
Claudia Sheinbaum will be Mexico’s next president. She formally assumes the position on October 1.
