‘ Committee does not bear Northwestern’s barrier of its monitoring ‘
A U. S. House education committee head demanded Northwestern University produce more info about its management of hatred on campus in a text Friday, alleging the university’s officials are “obstructing” a federal investigation.
Virginia Foxx, the chairwoman of the Education and the Workforce Committee, informed the board of trustees and president of the university, Peter Schill, that she would subpoena the university if it did n’t comply.
” The Committee does not bear Northwestern’s barrier of its monitoring and is prepared to convince the production of papers and evidence, if necessary”, the North Carolina congresswoman wrote in the letter, published on the agency’s website.
Foxx claimed the council requested the documents on May 10, but the school refused.
The” Northwestern Liberated Zone” protesters ‘ supporters were requested for information, including documents and communications, as well as the agreement that administrators reached with the protesters to put an end to their encampment.
In the agreement, the Illinois university promised to offer five full scholarships to Palestinian students, hire” two]Palestinian ] faculty per year for two years”, and provide a house for Middle Eastern and Muslim students. It even agreed to create a committee to examine its assets, The College Fix reported.
Foxx requested the school provide the records by June 17.
In her email, she also criticized President Schill’s testimony from May 23 to the council, saying it “hampered the Committee… by the fact that he clearly refused to answer concerns.”
According to Foxx, some of his statements “were inconsistent with the people report,” including those that “were made in opposition to the Agreement’s text” and showed an entire disdain for the Committee.
The congresswoman urged Northern leaders to explain to them that because their establishment receives federal tax money, they are held accountable to the American individuals.
According to Foxx,” It is incorrect to believe citizens to maintain providing federal money when Northwestern appears to be in breach of its responsibility under Title VI and defies the Committee’s oversight.”
According to a report from Crain’s Chicago Business,” Northwestern informed Crain’s that it is already reviewing the email and does not have a comment at this time.”
Foxx recently criticized the school’s rulers during the May reading, describing their partnership with pro- Arab protesters as “disgraceful”, The Fix reported at the time.
Schill made the concessions as the best way to end the camp without further issues, he told lawmakers at the hearing.
He added that a task force on antisemitism is being established by the university. He told the committee that there has been a “despicable spike in antisemitism” on college campuses following the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack.
The House education committee is in the process of investigating antisemitism at a number of prominent and Ivy League universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Rutgers, and the University of California Los Angeles.
