The” Israeli reason” is “antithetical.”
A pro-Israel student team was initially denied a place in the Vanderbilt Multicultural Leadership Council in March, but some users have just opened up in the student newspaper to explain their factors for voting “nay.”
According to , The Hustler, Kids Supporting Israel was rejected by the Vandy MLC, the just group to get a lot “nay” voting — 76 percent — of 11 companies that applied this spring semester.
One another party was denied account, the Vanderbilt United Mission for Relief and Development, but it fell only quiet of the two- quarters majority required for approval, getting 60 percent of votes in favor.
According to MLC President Zack Maaieh, both parties were the only ones who were turned down by the organization “at least in the past few years.”
Organizations that were accepted included Hebrew Voice for Peace at Vanderbilt, the Vanderbilt Iranian Student Association, and Vanderbilt Pride Serve.
According to its law, the MLC is an” ‘ awning organization’ of Vanderbilt’s cultural justice, identification- based and diverse student organizations”.
Several MLC members admitted that the neglect of SSI’s membership was owing to it being “antithetical” to the” Arab cause”. The SSI does not, as a result, “does not really need to cooperate with another student groups” and does not want to work” toward unification.”
A part of the Hebrew Voice for Peace noted they voted “nay” according to SSI being a” liberal” business, yet, but is Vandy’s Students for Justice in Palestine— which is a member of the MLC.
The JVP part added that SSI’s “pitch” to meet the MLC was “unconvincing”.

A Latin American Student executive board member was particularly vocal about SSI, claiming that the organization does n’t have” a culture or an identity” because it” supports ] a nation-state built on the ideology of political Zionism.”
The Multicultural Leadership Council’s acceptance, according to the ALAS member, would have “obstructed” its ability to serve as a” safe space” for other member groups.
” I think if a lot of the organizations do not support Israel, I really think there’s a very clear disconnect]between SSI and the MLC ] that just is n’t necessarily compatible”, the ALAS member said.
Students backed by Israel’s president Maya Robin described the vote as “blatant hatred and social.”
Robin said that because of their faith, the MLC’s refusal of Vanderbilt SSI erroneously obstructs Jewish students from conversations about variety and cultural spaces. She claimed that this reported discrimination was incompatible with the MLC’s goal.
According to Robin, “rejecting SSI from the MLC constitutes rejecting Israeli group participation in accordance with their fundamental religious convictions.” ” Space for variety, participation, and cross- social engagement on campus should not be gatekept for a limited few, but more welcoming to a wide range of perspectives and experiences”.
MLC President Maaieh stated that SSI could reapply for admission to the council, but that SSI would “need to appeal to every member organization and board member that has a vote.”
The MLC released a statement on Vanderbilt’s response to Gaza earlier this year, informing them that it” stands with the Palestinians and their right to liberation from years of settler-colonialism and apartheid.”
