After the Russian naval fleet sailed less than 30 km off South Florida’s coastline on Tuesday, U.S. authorities informed McClatchy and the Miami Herald that the U.S. Navy had deployed warships and plane to observe it.
Next week, Moscow sent , three ships and a atomic- driven submarine , to the Caribbean for what U. S. officials say will be a set of considerable martial air and naval exercises — the first of their style in at least five years.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the training started on Tuesday in the Atlantic with its nuclear and hypersonic-capable underwater simulating a hit on a group of army ships. Whether the ship is equipped with hypersonic missiles is a mystery, but the U.S. intellect community has determined that none of the Russian vessels are capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
A U.S. Northern Command national told McClatchy and the Herald on Tuesday that the Biden administration has stated it is not concerned by Russian activity, but that it has nonetheless authorized the implementation of three powerful ships and a submarine surveillance aircraft in the area.
The NORTHCOM standard stated that “we’ve been constantly monitoring the Russian boats as they transport the Atlantic Ocean within international waterways in accordance with normal procedures.” Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, air and sea forces have conducted activities to protect the United States and Canada. Russian naval deployments are a routine part of naval operations that do n’t directly concern the United States.
The U. S. implementation includes three guided- weapon ships — the USS Truxtun, USS Donald Cook and USS Delbert D. Black— as well as a Coast Guard blade, the Stone, and a Boeing P- 8 sea police plane.
Last year,  , confirming Russia’s implementation plans, a senior administration official said the U. S. Navy may follow “whatever the important position is to record and to screen” their activity as the exercises unfold.
Multiple officials said that an additional port call by the Russian ships is possible in Venezuela. The Biden administration anticipates that Russia’s naval exercises will include deployments from the Caribbean to the South Pacific.
The Russian missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov, Kazan, Pashin, Pashin, and Nikolai Chiker will arrive on June 12 and spend a week on board. According to the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, they will stay for a week.
Users of the website , marinetraffic.com , have been tracking the position of the U. S. and Russian ships in recent days. According to the website, the Russian sea rescue tug Nikolay Chiker was positioned 26 , nautical miles from Key Largo , on Tuesday morning.
Russian ships had a close call, but U.S. officials emphasized that they have remained in international waters.
” We have been monitoring the ships ‘ paths closely”, a U. S. official said Tuesday. ” At no point have the ships or submarine posed a direct threat to the United States.”
Global deployments
This week, the Port of Havana will be incredibly crowded.
HMCS Margaret Brooke, a patrol vessel for the Royal Canadian Navy, will arrive on Friday and stay until Monday, when the Russian ships are scheduled to depart.
The ship’s visit, according to Granma, highlights the “50th anniversary of cooperation ties” with Canada and the “bilateral collaboration for the maintenance of peace in our region.” It neglected to mention the presence of Russian navy assets at the port at the same time.
A Venezuelan training ship, the AB Simón BolÃvar, will also visit Santiago de Cuba, the island’s second largest city, between Saturday and June 19.
