
OAKLAND: A Juneteenth party turned violent when many people were shot, authorities in Oakland, California, said.
The Lake Merritt celebration on Wednesday evening was generally quiet, with as many as 5, 000 in presence, until a spectacle involving “motorbikes and vehicles” took place at Bellevue and Grand avenues at around 8: 15 p. m. on the northern side of the lake, police said in a news release Thursday.
According to authorities, a fight broke out near the spectacle and a crowd gathered nearby.
” During that battle several shots rang out”, Paul Chambers, OPD’s corporate communications director, said. At 8:45 p.m., a shooting occurred, and it was not immediately known how many people were hurt, according to authorities. A number of people were shot, and several were taken to a hospital, according to police. There were no accounts of incidents.
Many people struck OPD officials as officers attempted to bring the crowd to health, according to Chambers. He claimed that at least one man was detained for assaulting an agent. How many officials were attacked, according to the authorities.
As many as 20 police cars and several ambulances were present, according to KTVU-TV, which had a significant police presence. According to the authorities, 28 officials and four sergeants were present at the scene to keep an eye on the situation.
The feeling was described as disorganized and aggressive. Some attendees of the party criticized the officers for not responding quickly enough when people were hurt, according to KTVU, and some of the attendees verbally abused them.
Six people were injured and a 22-year-old San Francisco man was killed in a shooting at a June 20th event at Lake Merritt in 2021.
Authorities said the investigation of Wednesday night’s capturing is ongoing.
