    UnitedHealth cyberattack compromised credit cards, health history, Social Security numbers

    Hackers made off with Social Security numbers, credit card information, health histories and more in the February attack on a UnitedHealth Group company, the company disclosed Thursday.

    In a registration to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and a media launch, the Minnetonka-based health care behemoth provided more information about the type of consumer information compromised and a deadline for reaching those affected.

    A complete picture of who was affected and how it was affected is also unavailable, with up to one-third of Americans having had some or all of that information strewn in. The company stated that it will start mailing out notices to customers who are affected on Thursday, but it may take until late July for those who are not.

    While the statistics assessment is still in its early stages, Change Healthcare is continuing to offer credit monitoring and identity theft protection to those concerned that their data might be impacted, according to a statement from Change Healthcare.

    United Health, the state’s largest organization and the nation’s largest health employer, acquired Change Healthcare in late 2022. When the ransomware assault occurred, CEO Andrew Witty stated to lawmakers next month that the business was still working on security upgrades.

    The hack caused a significant amount of disruption for the United States ‘ health care system, which UnitedHealth paid a$ 22 million ransom to fix.

    Change Healthcare processes 15 billion health care transactions yearly, according to the national government, and is involved in one in every three client data. In the midst of the invasion, the transaction system was shut down, which affected the access to medications and solutions for patients.

    ” To all those impacted, let me be clear: I’m deeply, deeply sorry”, Witty said at a parliamentary barbecuing in May.

    Thursday’s reporting marks” the second step in the process” toward providing total observe, Change Healthcare said.

    Some health care customers will soon be informed that their users or individuals were impacted, according to the updated HIPAA recognize, in order to lead them to assistance.

    ” CHC plans to send direct notice ( written letters ) at the conclusion of the data review, as required, to affected individuals identified”, the filing said. As CHC completes its quality assurance treatments, the email process is anticipated to start in later July.

    The organization advises requesting a police record when a crime is suspected, as well as checking banks and credit card statements, health expenses, and credit reports.
