Apple is first company charged under new EU competition law

Apple is first company charged under new EU competition law

According to regulators in Brussels, Apple is putting unfair restrictions on game developers for its App Store in violation of a new EU rules intended to promote competition in the tech sector. The allegations further sparked a fight between Apple, which claims its products are made to serve customers ‘ needs and EU officials, who claim the business unfairly uses its size and significant resources to stifle competition.
The first company to face charges for breaking the Digital Markets Act, a 2022 law that gives European officials the power to compel the biggest “online gatekeeper” to alter their business practices, is Apple. After beginning an investigation in March, EU authorities discovered that Apple was imposing unconstitutional limitations on businesses that produce games, music, and other products. Apple is required by law to have a control over how businesses communicate with customers regarding sales and various promotions and information that is offered by the App Store. The company faces a penalty of up to 10 % of global revenue, a fine that could go up to 20 % for repeat infringements. Apple reported$ 383 billion in revenue last year.
” Today is a very crucial day for the successful enforcement of the DMA,” said Margrethe Vestager, senior vice president of the European Commission in charge of opposition plan. She claimed that Apple’s App Store practices make developers more reliant on the business and stop consumers from becoming conscious of better offers. Apple had a chance to reply, according to EU regulators, who said the allegations were primary. By the end of March, a decision will be made.
Apple defended its practices, claiming that Apple’s fees and rules are good because it gave consumers access to such a big platform. According to the company, developers can direct users to websites that do n’t fall under the App Store.
Apple has “made a number of alterations to comply with the DMA in response to comments from designers and the German Commission,” according to Apple. We can confidently say that our strategy is legal.
