Gov. Starting July 9, Maura Healey ordered immigrant families to stay at Logan Airport, a move that will force the frequently massive audience that has used the airports as a house to relocate to new locations, she said in a statement released on Friday.
Healey said the airport’s selection to forbid people from sleeping on the ground resulted from administration officials ‘ travels to the southern border to warn of a shelter shortage as an overflowing shelter at the former prison in Norfolk and the airport opened this month.
Scott Rice, a National Guard former overseeing the state’s emergency house system, said limiting people from sleeping at the airport is in the “best attention” of the households, travelers, and employees.
” The aircraft is not an ideal place for people to find shelter”, he said in a speech. In recent months, the administration has worked diligently to increase the number of people who have been displaced into more secure enclosure. We are today in a position to end the practice of people staying overnight in the aircraft thanks to this advancement, the new beginning of a new safety-net site in Norfolk, and the new nine-month length of stay plan.
Workers have been sleeping at the airport for weeks, which has sparked issue among those whose oversight and administration of the airport are. The Massachusetts Port Authority Board issued , a speech in October , urging the federal government to provide Massachusetts support.
The Healey administration announced that individuals who sleep at the airport will be able to travel to the flow house sites, including the original Norfolk prison, which opened this week and you accommodate up to 140 families.
The Healey management stated that staff on-site at Logan will work with people to let them know about this new plan and what options are available to them, including arranging for their travel to a nearby family home or choosing a safe place to stay.
Massport’s representative declined to comment on the decision.
Over the past year, the number of immigrants arriving in Massachusetts quickly surpassed the state-funded shelters there, prompting officials to expand the network through hotels and motels.
Some new arrivals found themselves with nowhere to stay but the floor of Logan Airport as migrants continued to arrive and Healey implemented a 7, 500-family limit on the shelter system. State-wide, overflow shelters have been established, but they also have quickly drained.
Healey has adopted a stringent set of ever-increasing regulations to limit families ‘ stays in shelters and require that families reapply for overflow shelter every month.
There were 7, 463 families in the emergency shelter system as of Thursday, according to state data.
