The July mandate may reduce businesses ‘ opportunity to provide certain medical benefits, according to reviewers of Nevada’s fresh minimum wage increase.
Every Nevada employee must be paid a minimum wage of$ 12 an hour as of July 1, regardless of workplace health-care benefits. The minimum wage in the state was previously$ 11.25 per hour, or$ 10.25 per hour if an employer provided qualifying health benefits, with the new policy.
The new regulation updates Nevada’s two-tier minimum wage program, which allowed employers to give pay different wages based on the health benefits they offered. Companies who offered health benefits like pregnancy and newborn care, emotional health and substance abuse treatment, and preventive and chronic disease management were permitted to give employees a salary rate up to$ 1 lower than the state minimum wage under the previous minimum income. According to critics, the standard scheme of the new law prevents employers from motivating employees to receive high-quality medical benefits.

JJ Wylie, who runs a small business in Las Vegas, told KTNV that the pay increase did push him to raise rates by 25- 50 percent. He noted the rising costs that buyers will be paying at his coffee shop and argued that the pay increase maintains an “equitable” wage level.
In 2019, therefore- Gov. Steve Sisolak ( D- NV ) signed a bill that raised the Nevada minimum wage by 75 cents each year beginning on Jan. 1, 2020, until it reached$ 12 per hour. The medical flexibility was maintained by the 2019 expenses. But, in 2022, Nevada electors approved a ballot measure to reduce the exclusions, mandating all companies pay the same pay level, regardless of company health benefits.
