According to the Biden administration, gender-affirming medical treatment should only be provided for grownups, not minors.
A White House spokesman told the 19th News,” These are very specific choices, and we think these surgeries should be done only for adults.”  ,
” We continue to support female- accepting treatment for minors, which represents a range of attention, and respect the position of parents, families, and doctors in these decisions”, they added.  ,
Transgender advocates immediately criticized the statement, accusing the management of betraying its commitment to supporting transgender youth and preventing them from making personal medical decisions.
” The Trump administration is flat improper on this”, Kelley Robinson, chairman of the Human Rights Campaign, told the Hill. ” It’s bad on the technology and right on the material. Additionally, it goes against various initiatives the presidency has made to support trans youth.
The firm has supported President Joe Biden and contributed millions to his election campaign.  ,
Allison Scott, director of impact and innovation at the Campaign for Southern Equality, described the administration’s statement as” cowardly” . ,
It is a troubling agreement to the right-wing abuse on transgender Americans, falling for their false stories about medical treatment and betraying a commitment to fairness and respect in the medical community, according to Scott in a declaration.  ,
” Government has no business inserting itself into private health choices that should be entirely between individuals, their services, and the victim’s parents or guardians”, Scott added.  ,
The administration’s statement contradicts the president’s earlier support for gender-affirming care for minors and opposition to state laws that restrict or forbid such treatments for youth.
There is no justification for restricting transgender youth’s access to the same care that many cisgender youth receive annually, according to Scott, who continued, and it is “dangerous to begin endorsing categorical bans or limitations on healthcare.” We demand that the Biden Administration retract this foolish statement and work to repair its harm.
Last month, in response to the Biden administration’s request, the Supreme Court announced it would review the constitutionality of bans on gender- affirming medical care for minors.
” It’s wrong that extreme officials are pushing hateful bills targeting transgender children, terrifying families, and criminalizing doctors. These are our kids. These are our neighbors. It’s cruel and it’s callous”, the spokesperson said in their recent statement, quoting a statement Biden made last summer.  ,
The staff of Adm. Rachel Levine, the Department’s assistant secretary for health, requested last week that the World Professional Association for Transgender Health outlaw the age restriction for minor transgender surgeries.
WPATH’s draft guidelines from 2021 proposed age minimums of 14 for hormone treatments, 15 for mastectomies, 16 for breast augmentation or facial surgeries, and 17 for surgeries on genitals or reproductive organs.
However, gender– affirming medical care for minors would only be advised for those with a” well- documented” history of gender incongruence and who show” the emotional and cognitive maturity” to consent to treatment.
