On Wednesday, the UNSMIL called on Libyan government to put an end to random punishments and to free social activist Al-Moatassim Al-Areebi.
According to a declaration from the mission, Al-Areebi, 29, and his friend Mohamed Shtewi were abducted on Monday in the area of Misrata by unexplained armed men in civilian clothes.
UNSMIL said that Shtewi was released” after being beaten” but that the movements of Al-Areebi “remain unidentified”.
UNSMIL urged Misrata state’s security and law enforcement agencies to immediately check the abduction of Al-Areebi, share his whereabouts, and protected his safe and fast release.
Misrata is a port city some 200 km ( 125 miles ) east of the capital Tripoli. Although the Tripoli state is regarded as being in charge of Misrata, it has not made any comments on the situation.
” Information of random punishments, enforced kidnappings, ill-treatment, abuse, and deaths in custody committed with violence continue to plague Libya”, the vision said.
Since a 2011 Nato-backed revolt that ousted its chief Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has experienced much stability or peace.
It split in 2014 between northeast groups in Benghazi, the second-largest town, and northern factions in Tripoli, with rival governments governing in each area.
The Mission has documented cases of at least 60 people being held indefinitely across the country for their social affiliation, according to UNSMIL in the speech.
