The Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act was introduced by Republican U.S. Representative Nick Langworthy of New York in an effort to address “escalating safety issues at the U.S. Canada frontier.”
The U. S. Canada boundary is the longest international border in the world of 5, 525 yards. The Center Square first reported that the greatest number of known or suspected terrorists ( KSTs ) to be apprehended in U.S. history occurred at the northern border in fiscal 2023, breaking the record set for the number of KSTs apprehended in the United States.
The northern border is actually autonomous and unpatrolled, and unlike the U.S. Mexico border, there are no boundary walls or other barriers separating the United States from Canada. The most KSTs have been apprehended at the northwestern border this fiscal year through June 20; 199 have so far, according to CBP information. By contrast, 117 have been apprehended at the south borders.
” Our northern border, the country’s longest unsecured borders, poses a major threat to our national safety, with hundreds of thousands of unnamed persons streaming into our communities every time”, Langworthy, whose , city shares an international border with Canada along Lake Erie,  , said. ” The Biden Administration’s carelessness has left us entirely vulnerable”, saying he introduced the bill” to keep the Department of Homeland Security account and maintain they report to Congress”.
The lack of administrative control at the northern frontier has been the subject of decades of reporting from The Center Square, which officials claim poses a serious threat to national security.
The northern frontier has seen the highest number of illegal entry in U.S. past under the Biden administration, according to The Center Square’s first report.
The number of illegal border crossings remained at record levels next fortnight after the highest number of people ever apprehended during May’s longest period of time was found.
The Center Square first reported that the highest number of known or suspected terrorists ( KSTs ) have also been consistently apprehended at the northern border. At the north border, arms and medication seizures are also on the rise.
Langworthy claimed to have met Border Patrol agents employed in upstate New York and “experienced their struggle first: they are greatly under-supported and given this crisis with limited resources. This policy is not just a requirement; rather, it calls for more accountability from the Biden Administration in relation to the safety and independence of our country.
The act mandates that DHS do and publish a Northern Border Threat Analysis every year and release its Northern Border Strategy within 90 days of publication. Additionally, among other things, it mandates that DHS provide classified meetings to Congress within 30 times of the risk evaluation distribution.
Numerous Republican cosponsors, including those who represent north border states, are included in the act.
Roughly twice as many people on the Known or Suspected Terrorist List as were apprehended at our northern border, according to cosponsor and fellow Republican New York partner, U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler. More than 270 million Americans have been found dead at the northern borders due to the amount of morphine. Roughly twice as many people have been apprehended at the north border overall as they have been in 2024. Despite these alarming statistics, the problems at our amorphous northern boundary has been even more flagrantly neglected than the one at our southern border.
No one is aware of how many criminal watch-listed persons have entered without getting caught, according to numerous officials who have written to The Center Square.
Former Border Patrol agent Mark Morgan told The Center Square,” The northern frontier is significantly underresourced by comparison to the south border. ” But at the same period, it also represents major threats. Cartels are expanding their operations, flying people into Canada, which does n’t require a visa, presenting an opportunity for terrorist watch-listed individuals to exploit. It’s much easier to find to Canada to come across”.
