In a service that made her the first person to control the nation’s military forces, General Jennie Carignan took over as Canada’s commander of the security team on Thursday.
Trained as a defense expert, Carignan has commanded forces in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq and Syria during her 35 times in the Canadian Army.
” I feel available, poised and supported to take on this cylinder challenge”, Carignan said at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
” Conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East, heightened conflicts elsewhere in the world, climate change, increased needs on our workers at home and abroad, threats to our democratic norms and institutions are just a few of the difficult issues we need to adjust to and counter,” Carignan said.
At a time when Canada is aiming to increase defence spending and upgrade its military forces, General Wayne Eyre assumes the role of the best military commander. He has been doing so since 2021.
Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his government’s intention to reach NATO’s defense-spending target of 2 % of GDP by 2032. Canada’s defence spending is expected to be 1.39 % of GDP in the 2024-25 fiscal time, according to government forecasts.
The military forces have been slow to replace obsolete equipment and are struggling to meet selection goals.
The navy’s head said the organization was in” a crucial state” last November and that it might not be able to perform its fundamental responsibilities in 2024.
” We’re facing some internal problems such as enrollment and retention”, Carignan said. We are aware of the difficulties we encounter and what we need to do to resolve them.
Since taking office in 2015, Trudeau has pursued laws designed to increase sex justice. He described Carignan as” a role model for all People and for the world.
He appointed Brenda Lucki as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s first adult leader in 2018.
The next two rulers general, Canada’s standard member of the British monarchy, have been women. Trudeau named them both.
