A bassinet carrying twin ladies rolled onto train tracks at Carlton rail train in Sydney on Sunday afternoon, killing a 40-year-old American programmer and his two-year-old child. Emergency services arrived on the scene and immediately saved one baby while the father, Anand Runwal, and the other baby lost their lives as the father made an effort to keep his daughters.
Within hours of the tragedy being reported, police arrived at Carlton rail station in Sydney’s north. According to the Mirror statement, the horrible event occurred as the family abruptly exited the platform lift and let go of the bassinet. When the train is exiting the raise, the director Paul Dunstan observed that they have taken their hands off the bassinet for a very little while, and whether it’s a gust of wind or something else, it appears that the pushchair has just started to roll in the direction of the lines.
Witnesses reported seeing the father leap onto the lines in a determined bid to save the twins. He attempted to raise the triple bassinet while a bystander made an unsuccessful attempt to stop the approaching train, but it was too late. The grandmother, aged 39, witnessed the incident from the system but was actually unharmed. Both her and the surviving child were taken to a doctor where they were both in good health.
Superintendent Dunstan added more details about the family’s actions, saying,” He’s really gone into’parent mode’ and tried to keep his two younger daughters that have fallen onto the tracks, and doing so has cost him his life,” but it was a very brave and heroic work by the father.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the bassinet hidden beneath the coach and audible crying. Officers” climbed under the coach and saved one of the children, who was sadly uninjured, and reunited her with the mother,” Dunstan continued. It appears the surviving child fell “in between the paths” and was “largely undisturbed”.
” Unfortunately, the other youngster, a two-year-old woman, and her dad- who attempted to save the kid- have passed away as a result of this incident”, Dunstan said.
The women ‘ family, a member of the local Hindu society, was left “very traumatised” and is now being supported by friends and family. Although her friends and family are supportive,” She’s obviously in horror and struggling with what’s happened today,” according to police director Paul Dunstan.
As Anand secured a new work at an IT company in North Sydney, the family of four had relocated from India to Sydney in October 2023, according to Sky News.
