Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old person who called 911 to report a feared invader at her Springfield house, was shot in the moments leading up to her deadly shooting, according to Illinois police bodycam images. The incident took place over the Independence Day weekend and resulted in criminal claims against one of the responding soldiers, which sparked President Joe Biden’s criticism.
Sean Grayson, a sheriff’s deputy in Sangamon region, is facing murder and other official misconduct charges. He has entered a not-guilty plea and been fired from the officers power. As they fire their guns at Massey, officials are spotted yelling at her to “put down a pot of boiling water.” The condition escalated when Grayson threatened to shoot her, leading to Massey’s deadly shooting.
When Massey called the police on July 6th because she believed one had broken in, the affair started. As she searched for her recognition, Grayson commented on a pot of water on the heater. Massey moved the pot and, after an exchange where she said,” I rebuke you in the name of Jesus”, Grayson responded with,” You better ( expletive ) not or I swear to God I’ll ( expletive ) shoot you in your ( expletive ) face”. After she ducked and raised her hands, he pulled out his revolver, shouted for her to lose the pot, and shot her.
Grayson has been held without bond in the Sangamon County Jail and faces major expenses, including first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a rifle, and established wrongdoing. According to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office, Grayson was certainly justified in using army against Massey.
President Joe Biden expressed his grief for Massey’s home, saying,” Sonya Massey, a dearest mother, friend, kid, and young Black woman, may be alive today. We are reminded of the tragic death of Sonya by a responding officer because very frequently Black Americans have security concerns that the majority of us do not.
The deputy’s actions were criticized by prominent civil rights attorney representing Massey’s home, and the tragedy was contrasted with other infamous instances of police violence. It will surprise the American people’s consciences. It is that foolish, that unwanted, that unfair, that unconstitutional”, Crump said. James Wilburn, Massey’s parents, thanked the Sangamon County attorney for their prompt action in handling the case.
The video has sparked protests and open outcry demanding justice for Massey. Attorney General of Illinois, Kwame Raoul, urged caution as the situation progressed through the criminal justice system. ” The system camera footage is tragic, and I offer my deepest sympathy to Sonya Massey’s home as they relive a time no home should knowledge”, Raoul said.
Key points of disagreement in the ongoing investigation are Grayson’s failure to turn up his body camera until after the shooting and his instruction to his partner not to administer medical care to Massey. If convicted, Grayson faces severe penalties, including life imprisonment for murder. His lawyer, Daniel Fultz, has declined to comment on the case.
