CDC simplifies rules for crossing the border with a dog after public outcry

Beginning August 1, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will simplify the rules for entering the United States with your dog in response to the uproar from dog users.

The&nbsp, updated rules&nbsp, require all dogs entering from a no or low-risk rabies country, which includes Canada, to be microchipped, at least 6 months old, and receipt of a completed&nbsp, Dog Import Form&nbsp, ( a free, 5-minute, online form ). Additionally, the upgrade allows for requests for airline industry waivers.

Recently, the CDC had said it would necessitate National dog owners to have an International Standards Organization-compatible chip and a U. S. Department of Agriculture-endorsed rabies vaccination certification. These criteria may have taken days and have cost hundreds of dollars to fulfill.

” These updates incorporate the comments received from the public, business partners, and various countries on the dog import rule, and understand and improve the processes for those bringing dogs from canine rabies-free or low-risk countries”, the CDC said in a statement.

Dog users are celebrating, but some also take issue with the 6 month period condition.

” We largely won”! said Deborah Williams, in her eighties, from Colden, New York. With her beautiful lab, Sam, she can continue to cross the border to Canada often thanks to the updated regulations.

Williams is unhappy, however, with the general direction that the CDC has taken with dog border crossing regulations. ” It was a disaster. There are so many people who made unwanted changes to their vacation plans. This should n’t be how a renowned public health organization runs their business, Williams said.

Williams even hopes the CDC may reconsider its 6 month period condition. Since most puppies can be vaccinated at three or four months,” That still does n’t make sense to me.” Breeders who sell pups under six weeks across the border are also losing money from that.

Wilma Herrera, 55, who runs US Dog Coalition and Rescue in North Carolina agrees. ” The CDC upgrade is a step in the right direction, but the 6 month law needs to be reconsidered”.

The initial regulations that came into effect on August 1 would have forced Herrera to prevent her canine rescue, but the update allows her to proceed, with a little more trouble. We can solve that by getting a chip and completing the dog import form.

Following months of bad feedback to the CDC, the reduced rules were released. Out of a growing concern for canine rabies, the organization announced new rules for entering the United States with a doggie starting August 1. The Aug. 1 laws caused mass protest, with&nbsp, dog owners saying the regulations were harsh and extreme&nbsp, and 14 senators signing a bipartisan email asking the CDC to evaluate its coverage.
