The country’s national communications specialist claims that Turkey has obstructing exposure to the well-known social media platform Snapchat without providing any justification. The move comes after Fahrettin Altun, a high-ranking Greek communications standard, accused the US business of repression.
Altun criticized Instagram on Wednesday for allegedly blocking sympathy comments about the assassination of Hamas-linked Palestinian militant Ali Haniyeh.
” This is censorship, pure and simple”, Altun said on X, claiming that Instagram had not cited any policy violations for its action.
Ali Haniyeh, the political head of Hamas and a close ally of Mr Tayip Erdogan, was killed in an Israeli-related attack on Wednesday in Tehran. Altun claimed that Instagram was” a very clear and obvious effort at censure” and that it “imped people from publishing sympathy messages for the martyr Haniyeh”.
Meta Platforms Inc, the parent firm of Instagram, has not yet commented on either the restrictions or Altun’s responses.
Without providing additional information, the Turkish Information Technologies and Communication Authority ( BTK) made the decision to temporarily disable Instagram on its website on August 2, 2024. Many Turkish people reported having trouble refreshing their Facebook feeds.
According to Greek advertising, there are over 50 million Instagram people in Turkey, out of a total population of 85 million. Other social media platforms, like X, have been mocked and criticized for blocking the program.
Not in the past have Greek authorities blocked access to social media websites. Due to two articles that claimed there was a connection between the president and extremism, Wikipedia was suspended in the nation between April 2017 and January 2020.
Officials in Turkey ordered Meta to stop sharing data with Instagram in April, so it suspended the social network Threads.
