In a recent report released by Virginia officers on Thursday, it was determined that Bob Good, the head of the House Freedom Caucus, had lost to former state senator John McGuire in the election.
The 5th Congressional District in Virginia’s final results were confirmed by the Good-requested tell benefits, which showed McGuire had won the election by 370 votes. That’s four seats fewer than the 374 vote-lead McGuire had following the state’s primary count of the June 18 culture. This November, the former state lawmaker does square off against Democrat Gloria Witt.
Good is one of the House’s most trusted Republicans, boasting a 100 percent conservative election history, according to Heritage Action’s legislative score. In recent years, he has opposed legislation syphoning U. S. tax wealth to Ukraine, gun control, large national paying bills, and reauthorization of national surveillance tools used to spy on Americans.
Rep. Chip Roy, a brother Freedom Caucus part, and Sens. Some conservatives endorsed Great for reelection, including Rand Paul and Mike Lee.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and former president Donald Trump, who both held tele-rallys for McGuire prior to the election, gave them support. Good’s aid of the Florida governor may have contributed to Trump’s decision to support McGuire. Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential main in 2024, despite the former president’s endorsement of a Republican in the previous election.

However, McCarthy’s bid to unseat Good appeared to be portion of a “revenge trip” aimed at ousting Republicans who removed him from the senate last year. Rep. Matt Gaetz, who spearheaded the opposition’s expelling campaign, allegedly claimed McCarthy broke promises he made to the Republican event when he took the position in January 2023. After the 2022 midterms, McCarthy sought to use Republicans ‘ slim House majority to win legal and legislative compromises from him among approximately 20 GOP staff.
Great reportedly received hundreds of thousands of dollars from GOP establishment teams in the Virginia 5 Republican primary.
