New Poll on Free Speech Raises Questions About How Free Americans Really Want to Be

The fight to remove barriers to freedom, such as censorship, has been at the forefront thanks to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression ( FIRE ). The party polled 1, 000 National people with a range of questions about the First Amendment, free talk, and the safety of those rights. &nbsp,

The study, published Thursday, raises concerns about Americans of all ages and whether they’re absolutely devoted to free speech and other legal rights.

According to Reason.com, “53 percent of respondents said that the First Amendment “goes too far in the right it guarantees” to at least some extent, with 28 percent saying it “mostly” or” completely describes their feelings”

This issue had a clear political divide. ” Over 60 percent of Democrats thought the First Amendment may go too far, compared to 52 percentage of Republicans”.

What does” too much” appear to be referring to?

” Presumably, one out of every two Americans wishes they had fewer legal rights”, Sean Stevens, FIRE’s key research director, said on Thursday. ” Many of them reject the right to organize, to have a free media, and to petition the government. This is a tyrant’s fantasy”.

The Supreme Court must be weakened in order to end the first British dictatorship. Liberals are threatening to do just that. &nbsp,

Further, 1 in 5 respondents said they were” somewhat” or “very” worried about losing their job if someone complains about something they said. Eighty-three percent reported self-censoring in the past month, with 23 percent doing but “fairly” or “very” frequently.

Only 22 percent of respondents said they believed the right to free speech was “very” or” entirely” safe. But despite these concerns, over a third&nbsp, said they trusted the state” somewhat”, “very much”, or” totally” to make sensible choices about what statement is deemed “intimidating”,” threatening”, “harassing”, and “indecent”, among other names.

In total, almost 7 out of 10 respondents thought that America is heading in the wrong direction with regard to free speech, despite the fact that it’s not known whether or not they feel enough about censorship of contentious speech.

The overwhelming majority of Americans who trust the government is a striking feature of this survey.

Americans are crying out for censorship. Around 40 % trust the government” somewhat”, “very much”, or” completely” to make fair decisions about what speech is considered terrifying, intimidating, threatening, harassing, annoying, disturbing, and indecent. Another quarter has a “little” faith in the government. And only 32 % of Americans said they were” not at all” comfortable with the government’s restrictions on pro-Hamas protesters ‘ speech.

They had every right to express their vile opinions as long as the pro-Hamas protesters were n’t breaking the law. But illegal tent encampments, acts of vandalism, and the occupation of buildings were not expressions of free speech. And a First Amendment tutorial is required for anyone who makes that claim.
