NYC turns to drones for flood warnings in vulnerable neighborhoods

New York City has moved beyond traditional techniques of emergency contact, investing in the bullhorn for cutting-edge systems. City officials are now using drones with loudspeakers to warn residents about possible wind dangers.
With a slight buzzing in the background, a aircraft equipped with a loudspeaker floats over districts, broadcasting instructions to those living in room or ground-floor flats about the risk of heavy precipitation, as reported by AP.
In video released by the state’s disaster management agency on Tuesday, the voice from the sky yells,” Be prepared to keep your location.” ” If flood occurs, do no hesitate”.
To protect neighborhoods prone to flooding, the town has dispatched five teams, each with some robots. These warnings are being issued in several languages and may continue until the temperature forces allow helicopter flights to be unsafe, according to Zach Iscol, the town’s crisis management commissioner.
For New Yorkers who reside in floor apartments, which can be a death trap during intense rainstorms, flash floods have proved fatal. In these homes, eleven persons cruelly drowned in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida in 2021.
These aircraft warnings are a part of a larger plan that includes words notifications, social media alerts, and a citywide communication network that includes text notifications. These agencies support elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
At a press conference on Tuesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said,” We live in a balloon, and we have to meet people where they are in messages so they can get prepared.”
Adams, who describes himself as a “tech geek”, has been a powerful advocate for incorporating systems into town control. His leadership has used drones to place sharks at city beaches and track huge crowds.
Also, the NYPD has experimented with robotics under his command, recently using a machine to guard the Times Square train station and deploying a mechanical dog in dangerous situations, such as during the 2023 Manhattan parking garage collapse.
