Syed Refaat Ahmed took the oath as Bangladesh’s fresh chief justice on Sunday, succeeding Obaidul Hassan, who resigned along with five different Appellate Division courts on Saturday.
Chief Justice Ahmed took the oath in front of Chief Justice Muhammad Yunus, the president’s standard residence’s Darbar Hall, where the president took the oath in front of chief director Professor Muhammad Yunus, who is now in charge of the interim administration following Hasina’s ouster.
In response to widespread street demonstrations calling for the courts to be reformed, protesters gathered at the apex court’s premises and issued an order for the judges to step down by 1 am.
Activists targeted Hassan, who was appointed to the Supreme Court next year, because they thought he was a loyalist of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
In response to the ongoing protests by kids and other protesters, some leading officials in Bangladesh have also resigned from their positions, including the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University and the director general of Bangla Academy.
The law government has decided to end all instances filed between July 1 and August 5 within three working days and release those who were detained there from Child Detention Centers as a result of new nationwide protests. The kids claimed that these cases were filed to stop the demonstrations of those who demanded Hasina’s resignation from power.
