
To the cheers of other division employees, the next sergeant of the Lower East Side of the New York Police Department was shot and wounded by a robber on Saturday during a turbulent arrest.
Cpl. Carl Johnson of the , 5th precinct , flashed a laugh and gave a thumbs up to ranges of applauding officials as his partner pushed him out of , Bellevue Hospital , in a chair, with his parents at his side.
” Feeling fine. Feeling good”, the 43-year-old commander replied when investigators asked how he was feeling. “( I’m ) a lot better than when I came in”.
The 16-year former credited his “brothers and sisters in orange” as a source of support as he recovered from the gruesome ordeal.
Johnson shook hands with , NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Tania Kinsella, before hopping in an NYPD vehicle and leaving with his parents.
The soldier’s release , came about two weeks after authorities say he and another commander were shot and wounded by 22-year-old assault think, Joshua Dorsett.
Dorsett, an alleged part of the Up the Hill group, raided a mah-jongg room on Canal St. near Eldridge St. at about 4: 15 p. m. Thursday, sticking up some people and running off with purses and money.
Responding officials, including Johnson, and Sgt. Christopher Leap, 34, of the , 7th district, caught up with the pirate at Delancey and Eldridge Sts., with the help of testimony at the field.
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, officers threw Dorsett against a car to apprehend him after he pulled a gun from his trousers pocket and fired one round at Johnson and Leap.
” The officials instruct him,’ Let me see your arms’. You hear the gun come off when the gunfight breaks out, according to Kenny.
Leap received a graze wound while Johnson was stricken in the thigh. In a stable condition, the two soldiers were transported to Bellevue Hospital.
Leap, who has served 11 years on the army, was released from the Kips Bay hospital Thursday evening.
Officials recovered a loaded .45 revolver and money on Dorsett following his arrest, Kenny said.
Lots of soldiers filled the court Friday evening as Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Melissa Lewis ordered Dorsett , held without bail , on expenses including attempted murder, assault, and unlawful possession of a tool.
” The respondent was tracked on film security, leaving the creation and is seen counting money nearby”, Assistant District Attorney Merielle Dee said at the trial. He then enters a clothing shop where he attempts to conceal his appearance, but is unable to find something and finally flees.
Dorsett is a member of the Up the Hill group, whose members were responsible for the execution-style , slaying of a gentleman and woman , from the Lower East Side in 2022, authorities said.
The , fatal double slaying , of youth companions Nikki Huang, 23, and Jesse Parrilla, 22, rocked lower Manhattan. A burned car near Pelham Bay’s Split Rock Golf Course was discovered with the bodies of the two people badly burned in it. Dorsett was no indicted for any crimes connected to the deaths.
Dorsett was previously arrested in 2022 for drug hands, and he will be up in court on August 23.
According to court documents the Special Narcotics Prosecutor filed, he was charged in 2022 with selling hole six times to an undercover agent between March and June.
Dorsett admitted to the illegal sales of a managed material at different places on the Lower East Side. He received a statement of three years probation in May, according to a spokesperson from the lawyer’s office.
Before robbing the mah-jongg room, Dorsett had met earlier in the day with his parole agent, according to Kenny.
Mayor Eric Adams praised the wounded soldiers ‘ bravery, citing both the dangers of working in law enforcement and the deadly risk posed by improper weapons.
According to Adams, who spoke to reporters in Bellevue following Leap’s relieve,” this firing highlights the risk that the men and women of all of our law enforcement populations in general and particularly the people of the NYPD face daily.” ” Dangerous people who are entirely capable of harming both city residents and authorities officials.”
On Thursday, Commissioner Caban thanked the two commanders for risking their lives to defend New Yorkers and expressed his condolences.
