DUBAI: The latest in a series of assaults against the Israel-Hamas war was a suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, according to authorities in the southeastern dark lake early on Tuesday.
Iran, the country’s major sponsor, is considering a potential reprisal attack against Israel in response to Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination in late July, which has heightened concerns about a wider geographical war erupting across the Mideast.
The Houthi assaults have already slowed down the$ 1 trillion worth of goods that transit the maritime corridor, which is essential for trade between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, and also sparked the most intense combat the US Navy has ever seen since World War II.
The attack happened around 115 kilometers ( 70 miles ) south of the Houthi-held port city of Hodeida, the British army’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. In a battle that has resulted in the deaths of four seamen since the Houthis launched the conflict in Gaza in October, they have used missiles and drones against more than 70 vessels.
