HONG KONG: A Hong Kong judge jailed pro-democracy advocate Owen Chow for three nights on Wednesday and fined his counsel, Phyllis Woo, for taking a file out of jail without license.
In a memorial regional security case from the beginning of May, Chow is one of 14 people who was found guilty of conspiring to defame a person. He is currently awaiting imprisonment, with the prevention case currently in progress.
He and Woo, 31, were convicted on the illegal file command in July, after having pleaded not guilty. Chow’s sentence is to be added to the other jail time he faces, while Woo was ordered to pay a fine of HK$ 1, 800 ($ 231 ).
Chow’s military attorney, Jeffrey Tam, said he would charm against the judgment and sentence.
Chow is now serving a sentence of more than five centuries after being found guilty of occupying the state’s government during massive pro-democracy demonstrations in 2019.
He gave Woo the “unauthorised” problem form at the center of the case during a constitutional visit to the Lai Chi Kok Reception Center on May 2 of last year.
Two books on Chinese Buddhism, which family members attempted to give him while he was incarcerated, were forbidden by the Correctional Services Department ( CSD ), according to Chow’s complaint to Hong Kong’s ombudsman.
Principal Magistrate Ivy Chui said she thought the issue type would have flown easily from the jail to the administrative guardian, the watchdog.
Chui characterized Chow’s devious deed as “reckless and foolish” In granting the fine, she considered Woo’s comparatively brief legal practice and her impeccable criminal history.
During the trial, the prosecution played closed-circuit television pictures of the visit, saying Lunch” discreetly” gave the problem kind to Woo after a captivity official left the room.
In a letter of reduction, Chow wrote,” This case is only the tip of the iceberg where custodial staff obstruct the practice of prisoners ‘ rights.”
Many novels he sought had been banned by the CSD for “ridiculous” factors over the past three decades, he added.
According to Chow, his body was raided seven days after he persisted in making a complaint, and he was punished in the most recent raid for possessing a Portuguese ovum tart “without permission,” despite the fact that the dessert had been a portion of a meal he had n’t finished.
Chow was placed in solitary confinement, told to participate in activities and take showers only, while local residents were all moved aside, he added.
” If the people in power want the world to become called… liberal, they must take responsibility, starting with facing the voices of susceptible neighborhoods”.
