Despite claims from the governor, stops have been made for months that transport migrants from Texas to six” sanctuary” locations nationwide. that Greg Abbott (R-TX ) has suggested that the state continues to send people to Democratic-run cities.
In a review of state information, the Washington Examiner discovered that Texas stopped sending buses north as far back as October 2023. The bus’s travel to the Capitol and Vice President Kamala Harris’s Washington property stopped ten weeks before, whereas those to Philadelphia and Los Angeles resumed in January.
The three different routes — New York City, Denver, and Chicago — were all halted in June.
When questioned about the close of the illegal border crossings between Texas and Mexico, Abbott’s press secretary Andrew Mahaleris claimed that the number of border crossings had significantly decreased.
The confusion in Abbott’s public comments since June, including those made at the GOP agreement in late July, suggested that the busing has continued, but it may be put on hold as border officials wait to see how immigration changes will develop over the coming months.
Brendan Steinhauser, a GOP political analyst in Texas and lover with , Steinhauser Strategies in Central Texas, said his information to Abbott would be to double down on the success of the procedure.
Say that if the program is not going to maintain because the statistics are down and it’s worked well. Say this energy has been effective. We were able to stop the sea. People are going to different states to provide — California, New Mexico”, said Steinhauser in a telephone call Friday. They might pick it up in two weeks.
The state spent$ 230 million to vehicle 119, 700 citizens to six locations. That averages out at$ 1, 921 per person.
Abbott initially announced in April 2022 that the position would give state-funded bus trips to Washington for people who had been detained by national Border Patrol agents and given legal stay in the country through emigration court proceedings.
Texas is providing contract trucks to deliver these unlawful refugees who have been dropped off by the Biden administration to Washington, D.C., Abbott said during a press conference at the time.” To enable local officials whose populations are being overwhelmed by swarms of illegal immigrants are being overwhelmed by hoards of…
According to Abbott,” We are sending them to the United States ‘ capital, where the Biden administration will be able to more quickly address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border,” adding that people would be dropped off at the” actions of the United States Capitol.”
Democrats criticized Abbott’s behavior as a political blunder that treated immigrants as puppets.
On certain weeks that time, the cars bypassed the Capitol and dropped off refugees outside Harris’s property, including on Christmas Eve.
The busing operation began in April 2022 with buses only going to Washington. Between April and December 2022, the state added additional destinations, including New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. In that time, 16, 000 people took bus rides.
” It was very slow to start. People had to be aware of it. We had to figure out how to put it into practice. There was a lot of questions about it, the legal side and liability, voluntary versus involuntary”, said Steinhauser. ” We now know how it’s turned out,” says the spokesperson, “it’s been going well enough.”
By July 2023, the state had added destinations to Denver and Los Angeles. Since its inception in April 2022, it has transported 25, 080 migrants in 14 months.
Between July and September 2023, another 20, 500 people boarded buses, or nearly 7, 000 per month.
An additional 46, 000 boarded buses between September and December 2023, roughly 15, 000 per month. By the end of last December, more than 92, 000 people had been bused to the six cities.
Rides to Philadelphia and Washington were stopped in the weeks leading up to the year’s end, but there was no public announcement that they would be discontinued.
Mayor of New York City Eric Adams filed a lawsuit against the Texas bus company at the beginning of 2024. Buses to Los Angeles were quietly stopped by Abbott.
Between January and June this year, approximately 25, 000 migrants boarded buses to the remaining cities: Chicago, New York City, and Denver.
Since the most recent state update on June 28th, 119, 400 have not changed.
Despite Abbott’s rhetoric, the busing operation has not continued despite the late July ruling that the New York City lawsuit had.
” Another WIN!In a post to X on July 31 Abbott wrote,” The New York Supreme Court REJECTED Mayor Adams ‘ attempt to stop Texas from busing migrants to his sanctuary city. Texas will continue to send migrants to sanctuary cities until the Biden-Harris Administration secures the border.

If Texas decides to resume offering free bus rides to immigrants, it will have the green light. Before the November election and the transition period before January, when arrests have historically increased, will determine whether there will be a return to busing.
