At a talk at an Indian Independence Day celebration in Queens, mayor Eric Adams of New York City made a mistake by repeatedly referring to India and its diaspora community as” Pakistan.”
The event, held at the Queens 9th India Day Parade on Saturday, was attended by people of the Indian-American area, and the period was adorned with American flags, tricolour bubbles, and flags reading” Mayor Adams Celebrates the Indian Community”.
Adams combined up India and Pakistan on three instances during his remarks, according to PTI, despite holding both the Indian tricolour and the American flag, being surrounded by Indian community members in tricolour-themed dress, and waving American flags.
He continued,” We raised the flag earlier this week at Bowling Green… And I think there is no greater symbol of what you can give to this area than the Pakistani officials who are continuing to rise in ranks and numbers as they continue to demonstrate that public safety is the necessity to our prosperity.”
Adams continued,” …So I thank you for allowing me to come around. I’ve known this group for so much, from little Pakistan and Queens, much Pakistan and Brooklyn, you are a key foundation of our whole town. But let’s continue to celebrate your self-reliance”, according to PTI.
At this point, someone from the audience corrected him by shouting” India” to understand the error.
Mayor Adams was present at flag-raising events in lower Manhattan’s Bowling Green Park on August 14 and 15, to honor Pakistan and India’s respective democracy days.
