Extreme rainstorms swept across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic claims on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Cities from New York City to Washington, DC, were affected by severe conditions that caused severe weather storms, big storm, and flash flood.
The National Weather Service issued warnings and recommendations as a result of the storms, which started in the evening, as heavy rain and strong winds slowed go and caused power outages and forced evacuations.
Serious Storms cause major cities to be affected
On Sunday, a series of slow-moving storms hit key towns along the Interstate 95 hall, including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC.
The National Weather Service issued a Serious Thunderstorm Watch for these places, reminder of the possibility of wind gusts up to 70 mph and thunder as big as “ping ping” balloons.
Concerns about flash flooding, major rainfall rates, and dangerous driving conditions were brought on by the storms.
    Flash flooding and disruptions
The storms ‘ heavy rains caused flash flooding to afflict the entire area. On Sunday night, flood in New Jersey slowed Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia.
In places like Stamford and Danbury, flash flood caused street shutdown and water rescues, especially in Western Connecticut. A big oil leak caused by a mudslide in Danbury, prompting evacuations of the Woodland Hills Complex.
    Ongoing significant climate risk
The most severe winds were expected to end by late Sunday night, but a second round of hurricanes are expected on Monday.
Residents of the affected areas are advised to be alert and take precautions as the area continues to experience troubled wind, even though the risk on Monday is being less severe and has a stage 1 risk.
